History
Garphu and Tangge sit off the main Lo Manthang circuit, reached via a rougher trail through some of Mustang's most eroded badlands terrain. Their sky caves are less studied and far less visited than those at Chosser, offering a much quieter encounter with the same archaeological mystery β carved cave complexes whose original builders and purpose remain only partially understood.
Stories & Legends
Because so few outsiders make the detour here, most of what's known locally comes from village oral history rather than published research β residents describe the caves as older than any living memory, used at various points as refuges, burial sites, and meditation retreats, consistent with patterns found elsewhere in Mustang's cave networks.
Practical Tips
Only worth adding if you have extra days and a guide experienced with this specific side route β lodging is minimal and irregular. Most standard 10β14 day itineraries skip this extension in favor of Chosser, which offers a similar experience with far easier access.
