History

Ghasa marks the cultural threshold of the route: the last predominantly Hindu village heading north, with Buddhist Thakali and Tibetan-influenced communities beginning immediately beyond it in Larjung and Kokhethanti. Chairo Gompa, near Larjung, is among the oldest Sakya-school monasteries in the Thak Khola region, serving as a spiritual anchor for the Thakali communities who historically controlled trade through the gorge.

Stories & Legends

The gorge between Ghasa and Larjung is flanked by Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, among the closest points anywhere on Earth where two 8,000-meter peaks face each other across a valley β€” locals describe the wind that funnels through here as the "breath of the mountains," said to carry blessings (or warnings) depending on its direction and strength.

Practical Tips

Watch for a marked change in architecture, dress, and cuisine as you pass through here β€” flat-roofed Thakali stone houses replace the thatched homes of the lower valley, and apple orchards begin to appear.
