History
Chele is the first village travelers reach after the Kagbeni checkpoint, marking the true start of the old Kingdom of Lo's territory. The landscape changes abruptly here β the last juniper and pine give way to the wind-carved desert canyons that define Upper Mustang.
Stories & Legends
The nearby Rangchung cave is associated with meditation retreats by wandering Buddhist practitioners over the centuries, part of a network of cave hermitages scattered across the cliffs of Upper Mustang, some still in occasional use today.
Practical Tips
Most itineraries treat Chele as a single overnight before continuing to Syangboche/Samar the next day β a fairly short, acclimatizing stage.
