High desert crossing with a hidden cave shrine

Rangbyung cave shrine with naturally-formed rock features venerated as self-arisen imagesHigh mountain passes (Chele La, Taklam La) with sweeping desert viewsPoplar groves β€” a rare patch of green in the barren landscape

History

This stage crosses some of the highest and starkest terrain on the route, climbing over the Chele La and Taklam La passes between canyon systems. Samar (Syangboche) sits in a small poplar-shaded oasis that has served travelers on this crossing for centuries.

Stories & Legends

Nearby, the Rangbyung cave houses rock formations understood by local Buddhist tradition as "self-arisen" (rangjung) sacred images β€” natural shapes in the stone interpreted as spontaneously manifested representations of deities, requiring no human carving to be considered holy.

Practical Tips

A physically demanding stage if trekking (two passes over 3,500m); jeeps cover it in under two hours. Layer up β€” wind exposure on the passes is significant even in otherwise mild weather.
